Ryan took Foster backpacking for the first time this weekend. SO CUTE. I love the idea of my guys going camping together and 'roughing it'. Foster had been camping before but this was the first time he would have to hike in and there wouldn't be things like a bathroom nearby (not that he has ever needed one in the past...) or running water. I suppose it's a landmark for Ryan more than for Foster.
They hiked in and looked at downed trees and lots of bugs. Ryan said that the 1 mile hike took a long time because of Foster wanting to be sure to check everything out and ask questions (adorable!). They threw rocks in the lake, made dinner under the stars, looked at things with a flashlight after dark, and slept together in the tent. The original plan had been to meet up with some friends who had camped the night before, but they got rained out so it was just the two Buchan boys.
It sounds like the trip was pretty much a success save for the fact that Foster didn't care for the boxed milk and bedtime was a little later and more high-energy than planned.
I'm looking forward to more camping trips as a family, our first is planned for early August when Ryan has a couple weeks off of work. We got a new giant tent and even a cot in preparation for our family-of-four camping adventures. Packing for anything these days is an event on its own, so it may be awhile before we're ready to all backpack together. Until then, I love the idea of Foster and Ryan hitting the trails together.
