Two Month Letter

Dear Sheperd,

You're now twice as old as you were the last time I wrote you a letter....but I've only gained 4 weeks. It's amazing to me what a difference a month can make to one person while barely being a blip in time for another. You've grown a lot in the last 4 weeks, soon we'll find out at the doctor how much. You're now pretty regularly sleeping 8 hours a night and have settled into a rhythm for your days too. Here is your typical day:

  • 7am: wake up for a feeding
  • 7:30am: go back to sleep
  • 9am: wake up and eat
  • 9:30-10:30am: be adorable and smile at Foster, likely get schlepped around somewhere
  • 10:30am: nap
  • Noon: wake up and eat
  • 12:30-1:30pm: be alert wherever it is that we are
  • 1:30pm: nap (hopefully with enough time that you've been out for awhile when it's time for me to put Foster down for his nap...but not so long that you could be up any minute...it's a delicate dance)
  • 3:30pm: wake up and eat
  • 3:45-6pm: hang out with me and Foster...usually outside in the front yard or playing in the living room. Occasionally we'll run to the store at this time or play with friends. Typically you eat again at some point during this time but rarely will really sleep.
  • 6pm: Usually you'll sleep in your bouncy chair during this time while I make dinner and then sometimes you'll continue to sleep while we eat
  • 7:30pm: eat
  • 8-10pm: generally be a jerk and scream or cry for one of us while the other puts Foster to bed. We've got a good routine at home where we have a bottle for you, a swaddle, and your bouncy chair. That really seems to help a LOT
  • 10pm: ideally this is your bedtime but sometimes it's pushed to 11
This constant cycle of waking, sleeping, and a little bit of play time for you makes our days go by so very, very fast. Sometimes it feels like we've just gotten going for the day and it's time to start getting ready for bed.

Even with our days going by quickly, you had another busy month. We started out by celebrating the Fourth of July with friends on the lake and at a BBQ. It has been a crazy hot summer and so wearing you around in the moby is sometimes less than ideal. With how fast you're growing it's not only extremely sweaty but it's also getting hard on my back. I swear, you and your brother are going to break me.

Just after you turned 4 weeks old we moved you out into your crib for the evenings. It's been really nice to let you have your own space. It had gotten to the point where I'd wake up because you were making noises but when I'd try to feed you, you would just keep sleeping. We knew it was time to let you sleep longer on your own. So far it's been going really well and I think it helps Foster to know that he's not the only one who isn't sleeping with momma and daddy at night.

A HUGE highlight of the month is how much you've been smiling. It just melts my heart to come out to your crib in the morning, unswaddle you, and have you just light up with a giant grin. You really pour on the charm with your smiles and Foster loves it when you look at him and beam. Often times you'll throw your arms out to the side and just open your mouth as wide as you can...that's when we know you're really happy. I can't wait for you to start laughing.

Another big perk of your second month of life was our trip to Portland with Nana and Grandpa. We took the bus downtown and then hopped on the train (both firsts for you). After arriving in Portland we took another bus to stay at the McMenamins Kennedy School. It's an old school that has been converted into a hotel with lots of fun bars, a theater, and big saltwater pool. It's always been a favorite of daddy's and mine and it was really fun to take you and Foster there. You were amazing during the days on the trip...but nights were really hard when you were struggling from 8-10pm or so. One night I had to walk the neighborhoods with you screaming for over 2 hours. Then Daddy had to do the same for another hour and a half. Luckily the next two nights weren't as bad but it made for a rough start to the trip. I'm really looking forward to when the evenings settle for you but I'm so grateful that those few hours each night are the only time you fuss.

I still feel like so much of your personality is just starting to come through, and I can't wait to see more of it!

I love you so much,

Mom
